Gokarna sunsets

Sunsets are beautiful. Sunsets where the land gives way to the vastness of the sea, even better. After all my visits to some popular while some not so popular beaches, this is something I can vouch for. While it is true that no sunset (or sunrise) can be as beautiful and enchanting as those over the Himalayas, beach-sunsets too, have something unique about them. As the Sun slowly sets over the horizon, everything at the beaches seem to slow down. After-all, it is indeed very hard to notice anything else as the rays of the setting start Sun start painting the sky with a thousand shades of yellow and then red.

Just like everyone else, I too like to sit by the beach and watch this magical display of colors, something which has been happening since billions of years but still feels uniquely gorgeous every single time. What I also like is people watching. Be it in the mountains, in the city, at the airport or at a beach, I have spent hours watching people and I quite enjoy it. So when I went on a solo trip to Gokarna some time back, I spent a lot of time in the evenings doing just that, watching people.

All the three evenings (or was is it four??!!) I spent in this quaint little temple-town were spent at one or the other beach there. Sipping a beer (beer-scene not as good as Goa 🙁 ) or lazing a top rocks over-looking the beach, as the heavy breeze ruffled my hair.

The beaches of Gokarna, even though not as actively maintained as most of the Goan beaches are, have a charm about them. They are not crowded, they are not commercialized — well up-to a certain extent at-least and you are not disturbed by pestering vendors trying to sell you everything from steamed ground-nuts, to corn-cobs and what not.

Here, once you have settled yourself in you can be rest assured that no one is going to disturb you while you spend your time reading, taking a quick nap as you sun-bath or do what I enjoy doing the most, do nothing.
