The ‘Tour’ That Never Happened

One of the things that we wanted to do during our stay in George Town, Penang, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage was to take a tour of the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, also known as the Blue Mansion. While researching for our trip, I had bumped upon this place unexpectedly and had spent some time reading about it. I was quite fascinated by its past (you can read about that on Wiki here) and was even more excited when I found that you could actually stay there. I decided to book the place for our stay in Penang. But one look at the tariff per night and I quickly came back to reality. But I wanted to see the place up close.

What could I do?

Thankfully, I found that they allowed visitors inside the mansion, actually parts of it, daily as part of the Daily Tours which they conducted. What made it even better was the fact that the fee for the daily tour of the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion was RM 17 which I was very much ok with.

But that was the end of all things good and my wish to visit this nineteenth-century mansion. When finally in George Town, I somehow temporarily forgot about this place and got lost in the so many things to see in George Town. By the time it suddenly struck me that I haven’t visited this place which I so wanted to, we rushed to the mansion but it was too late. The last tour of the day had ended and we weren’t even allowed inside the main gate. The polite Nepali security guard expressed his inability to allow us inside and all I had to be contended with were few random photos which I have shared here.

To be honest, I don’t even know why I am writing about it here. Maybe it is because I want to just write about my trip to a place I really wanted to visit and see up close but which did not materialise the way I had wanted to. Maybe not, I don’t know.

Have you too ever screwed-up like I did this one time? I hope not.
