Of all the place we visited in Malaysia, George Town was the most beautiful. Declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, this historical little town is a delight for people like me who enjoy getting a look and feel of the historic past of places. George Town with its charm had delighted me more than I had expected it to. No sooner had we walked out of the Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal in George Town after crossing over from Butterworth, the ageing but colorful buildings, the narrow roads and the seemingly easy-going people on the road made me fall in love with the place, almost immediately.
When you are so impressed by a place at its first look you can’t wait to get under its skin and explore. The same happened to us and in less than half an hour of checking in, we found ourselves wandering aimlessly in the streets of George Town. Mesmerized by the lovely old houses and shops on both sides, we walked and walked, street after street, until we could walk no more.

The suddenly realization of the fact that we hadn’t eaten anything since morning hit us. This however led to something very interesting and we found ourselves relishing a Chinese economy meal in to time, one that the Chinese local population eats. With so many things to choose from — some of which looked weird — was an unique but nice experience.
Before coming to Penang, we had decided to take it easy on our first day and head to the world heritage area only on the second day, but that was not to be. We couldn’t stop ourselves from doing a quick tour of the cobblestoned streets of the World Heritage area on a cute trishaw.
It was hard to get back to the hotel as the sun went down. We did that but not before we devoured some more lip-smacking food before our dinner.
Tomorrow we explore George Town!
Have you been to George Town? Would you want to go there someday?
