How to transport bike on Rajdhani Express

It was a weekend and I HAD to make use of it. Though I had a lot of time for my Ladakh trip but it’s always better to be well prepared rather than leaving things for the eleventh hour and when it comes to anything related to the Indian Railways’, you better do everything well in advance.

How to transport bike on Rajdhani Express

One of the most important things I had to be sure about was if I can transport my bike on the Rajdhani Express or not. And if yes, what is the complete procedure and the charges for the same. So, to ensure that I have all the info before I actually have to do it, I headed to the Parcel Office of the Bangalore City railway station. I thought it would be somewhere inside the station but was pleased to find it next to the parking lot. I parked my vehicle and went to the Parcel office and inquired the parcel officer about the shipping charges on Rajdhani and his answer confused me!! He said, its Rs.10 per kg 😮 (yes I DID NOT forget to mention that I was going to ship a bike)!!

Charges of Taking Bike/Motorcycle on Train

I left the counter window and then, after a few moments, went back again and asked him “Does the shipping charge of a BIKE depend on its weight!!”. At this, he suddenly seems to have realized his mistake and asked me to ‘wait a sec’. He pulled the calculator that was lying in front of him and got busy with it. Once done he said, it will cost me Rs.2,500/- to ship the bike from Bangalore(SBC) to Nizamuddin(NZM). I however saw, the figure on the calculator’s screen was Rs.2,350/- 😛 .

I then left the counter after thanking him and only to return with one more query.Asked him, what is the complete procedure to book the bike on RAJDHANI and more importantly, is the price which you have quoted is for RAJDHANI? To my second question, he replied me in affirmative.

Procedure of Taking Bike/Motorcycle on Train

Regarding the procedure, he said all I need to do is, be at the Parcel office well in advance of the train’s departure (3 hours to be specific). Also, he said the bike HAS TO BE on my name and all the papers (the RC book/smart card and the insurance) has to be produced at the time of booking. I was done with my queries and pretty satisfied by the answers I got from the booking officer.

As I left the counter, one more question pops up in my mind and I head back to him again :). I ask, “What is the charge for shipping the bike on any other train other than Rajdhani?” his answer to this, was, yet again confusing.

He replied, the charges are the same for Rajdhani & non-Rajdhani trains, which, to me, did not seem to be the case. Maybe he was too lazy to punch the calculator once more 😛 .

It remains to be seen how the actual shipping procedure goes on the day of my journey!

  1. This was a good query you cleared in advance n most important by your own. People can always help you by gathering information for you but cant make you or anyone fully satisfied…..:).

  2. Were you finally able to transport your bike? Also do you know if bike transportation is available on Mumbai – Delhi Rajdhani or Aug Kranti/ Duronto express?

    1. I was almost about to ship the bike when plans changed and I took my friend’s bike instead.
As far as I know, yes, you can transport in all the above-mentioned trains. As long as a train has a ‘luggage van’, you can take your bike in that train :-).

      Good luck!!

  3. I am very passionate about bike, that is why i have changed my name from sohan to bike, my friends call me bike as i just love biking, I am recently moving from Bangalore to Pune and have to transport my bike as well, but i can’t take a risk of a train, i can’t afford a single scratch on my royal Infield bike, I am planning to Ride from Bangalore to Pune.

  4. Thanks a lot.
What if I have RC and PUC under my name but insurance in previous owners name. Please advise.

  5. I’m planning to transport my bike from Delhi – Dimapur? Do you have any information if I can book it as a luggage in Rajdhani express so that I can travel in the same train? I’m not so sure if all Rajdhani Express are capable of carrying bikes.

    1. Hi Rob,

Sure you can. At least that was the case when I had carried my bike on train from Bangalore to Delhi a few years back. Albeit, it will be a little costly.

      1. Hi Rajiv,

Thanks for the reply. And apologies I couldn’t reply you sooner.
I have another doubt though. Do you think 5-8 mins stoppage time at Dimapur Railway station would give me sufficient time to unload the bike since Dimapur will not be the last stop for New Delhi – Dibrugarh Rajdhani Trains?

          1. Hi Rajiv, thanks for the information again. If that’s the case then I guess the only option left for me is to send my bike through parcel booking. I’m planning to travel on 15th Dec by Rajdhani. Would it be okay if I do the parcel booking on the 12th and they may probably transport my bike on 13th Dec? This will be the first time that I’m going to do a parcel or luggage booking. I will like my parcel to wait for me at Dimapur instead of me waiting for the parcel to arrive. And from Dimapur I’m going to drive it to Imphal (about 250 kms) which is my real destination. I might have to pay extra due to late picking up of parcel (if parcel reach before me) and I’m okay with paying the fine. Any suggestion from you will be very much appreciated.

          2. I would never send my bike via parcel. They are careless — be almost assured, your bike will be damaged. No proper time-line of delivery, you might have to wait for days in Dimapur for your bike to arrive.

If I were you, I would do one of the two following things:

1 – Get the bike via train to Guwahati and then ride from here to Imphal via Dimapur & Kohima. Lovely vistas around for most parts.

2 – Get the bike by train to Silchar or Badarpur (there’s a Rajdhani) and then ride to Imphal from here. Much shorter route but bad roads.

            Take your pick.

          3. Apology.. I’m adressing you as Rob my name. I’m typing from my cellphone so I might have paste it. 🙂

        1. You should be at the station at-least 3 hrs before the journey to get your vehicle. You must visit the parcel office well in advance to get the booking procedure done.

  7. Hi bro

Is it safe transporting RE from Bangalore to Chandigarh. Can I get to know avagare cost for one side please suggest me.

    Thanks in advance

    1. There are thousands of people transporting bikes via trains so, I would assume it’s fairly safe.

I have taken my bike from Bangalore to Delhi and then Bangalore to Guwahati in train and had have no complaints.

My friend has shipped his bike from New Delhi to Guwahati, in Rajdhani express and the bike had multiple damages.

The point I am trying to make is, you cannot be 100% sure about how safe will be shipping your bike in train.

The charges to ship motorcycle in train depends upon multiple factors so cannot give you an exact figure. But you can expect it to be anything between 2000 and 3500.

      Good luck!

    1. As per the requirements, the RC of the motorcycle should be on the name of the passenger traveling to take it as luggage on the train.

Otherwise, how will you prove you are the owner of the bike?

  8. Hi..thank you for your response
Today I went old n new Delhi railway station to parcel office to inquired about the transportation bike which RC is not in my name, the counter agent said it’s not possible
But Brooker told me it can be done and charge me 6k ..broker told me to bring RC origin insurance and photo copy id proof of the 1st owner if I bring that he will do it. So, is it possible? Should I trust him? Plz help me
